I am deeply offended by Secretary Kerry’s comments suggesting that Israel is at risk of becoming an apartheid state. Israel is the sole democracy in the Middle East and comparing it to apartheid is absurd and out of line. Israel is the one country where Arab people enjoy the rule of law and freedoms of democracy. On the other hand, Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas just announced a reconciliation with Hamas, the Islamic terrorist group that governs Gaza. Hamas denies the existence of Israel and is responsible for countless acts of terrorism against Israeli civilians. The Secretary’s comments - which seem to implicitly blame Israel for the recent collapse in talks between Israel and the Palestinians - is deeply troubling. The talks collapsed earlier this month after the Palestinian Authority reneged on commitments to the West and Israel. Despite his apology for using the word apartheid, Kerry’s remarks have damaged Israel’s position internationally.
